Kate Nash at the Roundhouse 6th July 2010
Well, considering it was a free gig, it seemed the whole crowd were impressed by the performance of Kate Nash as she took the stage. However, a lot of waiting was required. Believe me.
There didn’t seem to be a very large turn out at 5 o’clock on the day of the show. However, this soon increased as doors opening loomed. As everyone wandered in, they were given party bags and flags. Let’s face it, free stuff is always good. It turned out that it was actually Kate’s birthday and she was turning the ripe age of 23. That made the whole place even more exciting.
Peggy Sue came on first, and even though they were a last minute addition thanks to the cancelling of Darwin deez, they still had quite a big following. Kate was even watching them from the side of the stage. Luckily, I managed to get front row so I could see these things.
Just a little note to iTunes: Please do not send e-mails to my junk mail. My phone would not pick it up so I did not find out about the change of act until my friend texted me. Still, I was pleasantly surprised.
Peggy Sue was fronted by both female vocalists and even though their music had a slight edge to it, it did border on more of a folk/indie sound. This was confirmed with the addition of an accordion. However, the whole vibe did work to create a sound that I was sure I hadn’t heard of. There were some familiar influences however. Think maybe Kate Nash and more of a country style as well.
Well the band as a whole were very slick and played well. Both female singers swapped taking the lead, leading to  lot more variety than most bands these days and I was genuinely impressed that both could play so many instruments. Their music has a heavy drum line, however, it isn’t no drum and bass music. It actually has rhythm and serious lyrics and a melody.
It may not be dance party, but it’s still pretty cool to listen to.
After another long wait, Kate finally came on dressed in, well, something that I would wear. That takes a lot these days. Her ‘get-up’ included an oversized, puffball, asymmetric skirted dress with leggings. Yes, very odd yet it suited her well. Of course, there was the complimentary tiara to show it was her birthday once again.
Not that anyone didn’t know and if they didn’t…well they must have had some issues?
The opening song, Paris, was pretty upbeat and sparky. There were bright lights, a lot of energy on stage and you could see the hardcore fans around me sing every word. However, I haven’t got her new album yet (My Best Friend is You) and as I am more of an old style Kate Nash fan, I hadn’t felt the need to pick up her new album urgently. From what I had heard on you tube, I wasn’t too keen on her new material anyways.
However, her performance at the Roundhouse did change this. I now feel the need to go out and buy it.
Do Wah Do followed, along with a big variety of her newer and older songs. However, within the back catalogue of songs they were all of her released songs. I guess I had to expect that, but I was hoping that she would play Birds and Nicest thing. However, the seventeen songs she did play were very good and well played.
There was a good variety of the slower ballads (if you can call them that) as they would be neatly followed by an upbeat tune that got the whole crowd jumping, waving their free flags and throwing the balloons everywhere.
In fact, I was glad as hell when they did give us balloons, it helped pass the two hours waiting.
Kate showed her talent whilst changing instruments quite often in her set, again giving variety. I do have to say that one song did stick in my mind for a while afterwards.
Happy Birthday.
The drummer quickly exited and brought back a birthday cake so the crowd sang again and balloons fell from the ceiling. Yes, more balloons to hit and play with like volley balls. It did slightly distract from the following 3 songs (including encore) but then again it was fun to be hitting these balloons.
It all stayed upbeat, though it became very entertaining when Kate Decided to step on her keyboard. Speaking of which, that keyboard was very nicely decorated with lights and a gold piece of material. It was very pretty. Her outrageous change of costume matched this act, and well, it was exciting.
Overall, I was incredibly impressed with Kate and her bands performance. All the songs were tight and catchy, and I came out with a smile on my face (Especially because I got a set list!) There was definitely talent shown that night.
I don’t really think I remember anything bad about this gig, everything seemed great. It takes a lot for me to say that, usually there is something I find annoying at a show.
Anyway, her new single Kiss The Grrrl came out a week or so ago. Go check it out if you want.
Personally, I like it these days.I haven’t managed to get Kate Nash out of my head since I’ve seen her.Damn.
